I want to make you aware of the upcoming solidarity action in support of the New Bedford Coalition to Save our Schools and our ongoing fight against charter expansion in the city of New Bedford. Many of you have expressed your concern and support to the educators, parents and students of New Bedford. As MTA’s Director of Affiliates Services, I wanted to make sure that you were aware of the action, which will be held at noon at the Kempton School in New Bedford on March 23.
For those who may not be familiar with the situation, DESE has approved an expansion plan for a New Bedford charter school that entails the city gifting (at no cost) the publicly owned Kempton School building to the Alma del Mar Charter. This proposed new model would eliminate the lottery system and instead redistrict New Bedford’s public schools in order to allow this charter to operate as a traditional neighborhood school, forcing students in that neighborhood to attend the charter. This is outrageous!
DESE Commissioner Jeff Riley has made clear that this is the new model for future charter expansion across the Commonwealth. Stopping this expansion in New Bedford is not only a vital local issue, Riley’s plan represents a serious threat to ALL MTA locals and public school districts throughout the Commonwealth.
Please circulate the attached flyer to your members. Please ask them to support New Bedford Educators and the community at large by attending the rally on March 23. See the link below to share the event on Facebook.
